Why Did The Republicans And Democrats Swap Their Social Ideologies In The Past?
Democrats have always been fiscal liberals, and Republicans have always been fiscal conservatives.
But Republicans used to be the progressive liberals, in terms of social policy. The democrats were anti-black and anti-immigrant.

Because the South (which used to be Democratic) didn’t like it when the Democrats (especially Kennedy) started supporting civil rights for Blacks (and women) in the 60’s. Because bigotry is still prominent in the South, they switched to the party that was less interested in equal rights: the Republicans.
It’s not the Dems or the Repubs that switched so much as THE SOUTH. Whichever party has the South behind it is the one that will stand AGAINST social progress.
OutlawCajun is REALLY backwards. It wasn’t Democrats that were slaveholders; it was Southerners that voted Democrat. Now those people vote Republican.
They’ve never switched.
The Democrats are still anti-black and anti-immigrant. They’ve just become far more sophisticated in their hatred, using government programs and low wages to supress and destroy the black family. The Democrats use senseless, give-away programs as a power wedge to keep those on the liberal-plantation voting Democrat, all the while reducing black progress and pride. The Democrats still promote the yoke of slavery for all poor people.
It is the Republican party that wants all people to succeed using their God given talents and personal responsibility. We support all people achieving greatness as the sole prescription to happiness.
The dem’s switched sometime around the turn of the last century. Democrats were the majority slave owners of the Old South. They switched to social liberals for one main reason. Propagation of slavery,but not just the blacks, but the entire country. One thing to remember in history, it was the democrats that founded and continue to this day to support the KKK, ie, Robert Byrd, David Duke and so on.
My maternal great grandfather was a Grand Dragon in the KKK and a hard core democrat. I remember him saying that the republicans would be the ruin of America. Boy, was he ever wrong.
Conservatism is the only answer to our ills. Our founding fathers knew this and created the most successful framework for government in history around these ideas. It is sad to see the destructive liberal agenda being pushed forward nowadays.
