Democrats were the majority slave owners of the Old South. They switched to social liberals for one main reason. Propagation of slavery,but not just the blacks, but the entire country. One thing to remember in history, it was the democrats that founded and continue to this day to support the KKK, ie, Robert Byrd, David Duke and so on. My maternal great grandfather was a Grand Dragon in the KKK and a hard core democrat. I remember him saying that the republicans would be the ruin of America. Boy, was he ever wrong. The Democrats still promote the yoke of slavery for all poor people. It is the Republican party that wants all people to succeed using their God given talents and personal responsibility. We support all people achieving greatness as the sole prescription to happiness. They’ve never switched.
